kom bibi, bibi! expression or saying

Swiss German summoning cry for chickens, to be yelled at a high pitch and volume when serving them household scraps

Origin

From Swiss au pair girl Regula

Collector

King family – 1950s
Naomi’s family growing up

Notes

When the King family left for West Africa Pa & Evelyn gave their hens to their char-woman, Mrs Chilvers, whose hens were physically indistinguishable from her flock. When passing Mrs Chilvers’s Regula called out, “Kom bibi, bibi! Kom bibi, bibi!” and the King hens rushed to the fence expecting to be fed, while Mrs Chilvers’s chooks watched on in mild bewilderment
